Making Chinese Canteen Easier To Find, Choose And Order From
A local-search-led website built to turn Cambridge discovery into direct orders

Context And Strategic Question
Chinese Canteen is a family-run restaurant on Bridge Street in the heart of Cambridge, a few doors from St John’s and Magdalene College. Its kitchen brings together Sichuan heat, Cantonese precision and hand-pulled noodles, with more than 130 dishes cooked fresh to order over an open flame.
The product was already there: generous food, real craft and a central location. The opportunity was digital.
For many potential guests, the first interaction with a restaurant now happens before they walk through the door. They search for Chinese food in Cambridge, check a menu, look at photographs, compare delivery options and decide quickly. If the restaurant is hard to find, difficult to understand or sends guests immediately to third-party platforms, the business loses control of both the customer journey and the relationship that follows.
Chinese Canteen needed a website that could do more than look good. It needed to make the restaurant feel as distinctive online as it does in person, help more local diners find it when they search, and make ordering for collection the easiest next step.
The strategic question was simple:
How do we turn searches for Chinese food in Cambridge into a confident, direct path to Chinese Canteen — while building a digital presence that reflects the quality of the kitchen?
The Digital Opportunity
The work centred on three connected opportunities.
Make The Restaurant Distinct In Seconds
Chinese Canteen is not a generic takeaway. It is a real kitchen with a point of view: food made to order, hand-pulled noodles, open-flame cooking and dishes from across China’s regional cuisines.
The new website needed to communicate that difference immediately. We positioned the brand around the contrast that makes it memorable: Sichuan fire and Cantonese poise. The copy, imagery and page structure were designed to make the food, craft and atmosphere clear before a visitor had to hunt for them.
Turn The Website Into A Direct Ordering Route
Third-party delivery platforms remain useful for reach, but they should not be the only route between a restaurant and its customers.
We designed the website around clear, repeated Order Online and Order & Collect actions. A visitor can discover the restaurant, explore the menu, check the location and opening hours, then move directly into an order journey for collection. This gives Chinese Canteen a stronger owned channel, reduces unnecessary dependency on marketplace commissions and makes it easier to build a direct relationship with local customers over time.
Build For Local Discovery
The website was structured around the questions a hungry Cambridge customer is actually asking:
Where can I get great Chinese food in Cambridge?
What kind of food does Chinese Canteen serve?
Can I see the menu before I decide?
Is it nearby, open now and easy to collect from?
Can I order directly?
Clear page hierarchy, descriptive content, menu-led browsing, location information and strong calls to action help search engines and people understand the restaurant quickly. Rather than treating SEO as a technical add-on, we treated it as part of the customer experience: clear language, useful information and an obvious next step.
The Solution
We created a digital home that feels closer to the experience of visiting Chinese Canteen itself: warm, direct, generous and full of character.
The homepage introduces the restaurant through its food and its point of view, then gives visitors a simple route into the menu, the kitchen story, the location and online ordering. Photography is used to make the food tangible, while the copy gives context to the craft behind it.
The menu experience was designed to help people browse before they commit. Dishes, dietary markers and food imagery reduce uncertainty, while direct ordering actions remain close at hand. For customers who already know what they want, the route to collection is quick. For people still deciding, the site gives them enough reason to choose Chinese Canteen over another search result.
We also made practical information easy to find: Bridge Street location, opening hours, phone number, reservations and collection details. These are small details, but together they remove friction at the exact moment someone is deciding where to eat.
A Better Journey From Search To Collection
The finished website gives Chinese Canteen a more joined-up digital journey.
A local diner can now discover the restaurant through search, understand what makes the food different, browse the menu, confirm the location and place a direct order for collection without being pushed through an unclear or fragmented experience.
The goal was not simply a more polished website. It was a stronger commercial tool: one that turns local visibility into action, makes the direct collection route more visible and gives the restaurant a brand presence worthy of the food it serves.
“When you pair unexpected and revealing strategy with unrivaled creativity, the potential for impact is limitless.”

Strategic Outcomes And What To Measure Next
The new website creates the foundations for Chinese Canteen to measure and improve its digital performance over time.
Direct Ordering Demand
The most important measure is how many visitors move from the website into the Order Online journey, especially from the Order & Collect calls to action. This shows whether the website is becoming a meaningful direct channel rather than simply a digital brochure.
Key measures:
Clicks to Order Online
Collection-order intent by page and device
Traffic from Google search into the menu and ordering journey
Repeat visits to the website from local customers
Local Search Visibility
The site is designed to help Chinese Canteen become easier to understand for search engines and prospective customers. Over time, performance should be tracked around local discovery terms and high-intent restaurant searches.
Key measures:
Organic visits from Cambridge-based food searches
Visibility for relevant local terms
Click-through rate from search results
Growth in visits to menu, location and order pages
A Brand That Matches The Kitchen
The most valuable outcome is alignment. A person who first discovers Chinese Canteen through Google, social media or a late-night search should encounter the same sense of quality, generosity and craft that they experience at 30 Bridge Street.
The website gives Chinese Canteen a clearer digital identity, a more direct path to collection orders and a stronger base for long-term local growth.
